Euphorbia evansii (Euphorbia grandidens)

Euphorbia evansii (Euphorbia grandidens)

Euphorbia evansii is a striking succulent Euphorbia known for its upright, architectural growth and angular green branches. As it matures, the plant develops a distinctive tree-like, candelabra form, giving it a sculptural appearance that stands apart from more traditional leafy houseplants.

Native to southern Africa, this plant can eventually become a substantial succulent tree in its natural environment. Kew now includes Euphorbia evansii within Euphorbia grandidens, an accepted species native from southern Mozambique through parts of eastern and southern South Africa and Eswatini. In its native habitat, E. grandidens can reach approximately 10–16 metres, although container-grown plants indoors remain considerably more manageable.

Sun Requirements ▾

Provide very bright light with direct sunlight where possible. A bright south- or west-facing exposure can be suitable indoors, although plants should be gradually acclimated to stronger direct sunlight to reduce the risk of scorching. Insufficient light can contribute to weaker, less compact growth. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light; for this sun-loving succulent, choose a sufficiently strong grow light rather than relying on a low-output supplemental lamp.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water thoroughly and then allow the growing medium to dry substantially before watering again. Its succulent stems store moisture, making consistently wet soil unnecessary and potentially damaging. Water less frequently during periods of slower winter growth. A moisture meter can help determine whether moisture remains deeper in the container before additional water is applied.

Care Tips ▾

Grow Euphorbia grandidens in a fast-draining cactus or succulent growing medium and use a container that allows excess moisture to escape. It does not require the elevated humidity preferred by many tropical foliage plants and generally performs well in normal household humidity. Protect it from cold drafts and prolonged cool, wet conditions. Wear gloves when pruning, repotting, or handling damaged stems and prevent Euphorbia sap from contacting the skin or eyes.
