African Candelabra Tree (Euphorbia ingens)
African Candelabra Tree (Euphorbia ingens)
Euphorbia ingens, commonly known as the African Candelabra Tree, is a striking succulent species recognized for its tall, upright stems and distinctive branching growth. Its sculptural silhouette gives it a cactus-like appearance, although it is actually a member of the Euphorbiaceae family rather than a true cactus.
Native to parts of southern Africa, Euphorbia ingens can develop into a substantial tree in its natural habitat. As an indoor container plant, its bold vertical form makes it an impressive statement houseplant, particularly in bright spaces where it can receive the strong light it needs for healthy, compact growth.

Sun Requirements ▾
African Candelabra Tree performs best in very bright light and can tolerate direct sun, particularly when gradually acclimated to stronger exposure. Indoors, position it near your brightest available window. Plants moved suddenly from lower light into intense direct sunlight may scorch, so increase exposure gradually. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light, although a strong grow light is preferable for this high-light species.
Watering Instructions ▾
Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to dry substantially before watering again. Euphorbia ingens is drought tolerant and is much more vulnerable to problems from persistent excess moisture than from brief periods of dryness. Reduce watering during periods of slower winter growth. A moisture meter can help check moisture deeper within the pot before watering, but it should be used alongside checking the growing medium and overall plant conditions.
Care Tips ▾
Plant African Candelabra Tree in a very well-draining succulent or cactus-style growing medium. Good drainage is particularly important because prolonged wet conditions can encourage root and stem problems. Normal household humidity is generally suitable, and the plant does not require the elevated humidity preferred by many tropical foliage plants. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature extremes. Wear gloves when pruning, repotting, or handling damaged stems, and avoid contact with the milky latex sap.
