Honeywood Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Honeywood’)
Honeywood Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Honeywood’)
Honeywood Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Honeywood’) is a hardy native fruiting shrub prized for its large sweet purple berries, beautiful spring blossoms, and exceptional Prairie adaptability. This productive saskatoon variety produces abundant clusters of flavourful berries that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, preserves, smoothies, and freezing.
In spring, masses of delicate white flowers cover the branches and attract bees and pollinators while creating outstanding ornamental value in the landscape. The lush green foliage provides soft texture throughout summer before turning brilliant shades of orange and red in autumn. Its upright multi-stemmed growth habit makes it an excellent choice for edible landscapes, shelterbelts, naturalized plantings, and backyard berry production.
Honeywood is especially valued for its heavy fruit production and large berry size compared to many other saskatoon varieties. The berries ripen in early to mid-summer and are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and flavour. Birds are also highly attracted to the fruit, making netting useful if protecting the crop for harvest.
In Alberta, Honeywood Saskatoon performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment and fruit development. It thrives in Prairie climates with exceptional cold hardiness and minimal maintenance requirements once mature.
