Lettuce Leaf Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Lettuce Leaf’)

Lettuce Leaf Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Lettuce Leaf’)

Lettuce Leaf Basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Lettuce Leaf’) is a unique heirloom basil variety prized for its exceptionally large, crinkled leaves and classic sweet basil flavour. Producing some of the largest leaves of any basil variety, this vigorous herb is ideal for gardeners who love fresh herbs and abundant harvests throughout the growing season.

The oversized bright green leaves can reach up to 15 cm (6 inches) long and have a lightly ruffled texture resembling lettuce leaves, giving the variety its name. The leaves are highly aromatic and packed with the sweet, spicy flavour that makes basil a staple in kitchens around the world. Their large size makes them perfect for pesto, sandwiches, wraps, salads, fresh garnishes, and a wide variety of cooked dishes.

Lettuce Leaf Basil develops a bushy, productive habit that provides continual harvests when regularly picked. The attractive foliage also makes it an ornamental addition to vegetable gardens, herb gardens, patio containers, and raised beds. Frequent harvesting encourages branching and helps maintain a steady supply of fresh leaves throughout the season.

In Alberta, Lettuce Leaf Basil thrives during the warm summer months and performs exceptionally well in containers, raised beds, and sunny garden locations.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for vigorous growth and the best flavour development. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight encourages larger leaves, dense growth, and stronger aromatic oils. In cooler climates like Alberta, a warm, sunny location will maximize growth and harvest potential.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top portion of the soil begins to dry. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot weather. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.

Care Tips ▾

Harvest regularly by pinching stems just above a leaf set to encourage bushier growth. Remove flower buds as they appear to prolong leaf production and maintain the best flavour.
