Little Giant Cedar/Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis ‘Little Giant’)

Little Giant Cedar/Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis ‘Little Giant’)

Little Giant Cedar/Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis ‘Little Giant’) is a compact dwarf evergreen shrub known for its dense globe-shaped form and rich green foliage. This slow-growing arborvitae maintains a naturally rounded habit without pruning, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for foundation planting, borders, rock gardens, and formal landscapes.

The soft, fan-like evergreen foliage retains its attractive green colour throughout the year, providing winter structure and year-round texture in the landscape. Its compact size makes it especially useful in smaller gardens, urban spaces, and decorative planting schemes where larger evergreens may become overwhelming.

In Alberta, Little Giant Arborvitae performs best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. It is extremely cold-hardy and adapts well to Prairie conditions, though protection from harsh winter winds may help prevent foliage bronzing in exposed locations.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to part shade. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the densest growth. Light afternoon shade is tolerated, particularly in warmer locations.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment. Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogged soil.

Care Tips ▾

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the roots, keeping mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk. Pruning is rarely necessary, requiring only the removal of damaged or dead branches. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
