Lotus Vine (Lotus berthelotii)
Lotus Vine (Lotus berthelotii)
Lotus Vine (Lotus berthelotii) is a striking trailing plant prized for its fine silvery-green foliage, cascading growth habit, and unique texture. This tropical ornamental creates a soft waterfall effect in hanging baskets, patio containers, window boxes, and mixed planters, adding elegant contrast to flowering annuals throughout the growing season.
The slender needle-like foliage forms dense trailing stems that spill gracefully over the edges of containers, creating a delicate, airy appearance. In ideal growing conditions, mature plants may produce distinctive curved flowers in shades of fiery orange-red, often described as resembling a parrot’s beak. Even when not in bloom, the attractive silver foliage provides season-long interest and complements a wide range of flowering plants.
Lotus Vine thrives in warm, sunny conditions and is especially valued for its drought tolerance and heat resistance once established. Its trailing habit makes it an excellent choice as a "spiller" in container combinations, where it softens edges and adds movement to plantings.
In Alberta, Lotus Vine performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. It flourishes throughout the summer season and provides beautiful texture in outdoor containers until frost.
