Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) 26
Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is a native North American deciduous tree known for its distinctive palmate leaves, spring flower clusters, and smooth brown nuts enclosed in husks. This medium-sized tree develops a rounded canopy and provides seasonal interest with yellow-green flowers in spring and yellow fall colour.
As a native species, Ohio Buckeye is commonly used in naturalized landscapes, shelterbelts, and larger properties where space allows. It supports local ecosystems and offers early-season nectar for pollinators. The tree produces glossy brown seeds (“buckeyes”) that are visually distinctive but not edible.
In Alberta, Ohio Buckeye can be grown in suitable locations but requires protection from harsh winds and prefers consistent moisture during establishment. It is best suited to larger landscapes rather than compact urban spaces.
