Periwinkle Illumination (vinca minor)

Periwinkle Illumination (vinca minor)

Periwinkle ‘Illumination’ (Vinca minor ‘Illumination’) is a striking variegated groundcover prized for its brilliant golden-yellow foliage, vibrant blue flowers, and vigorous spreading habit. This unique selection offers much more colour than traditional periwinkle varieties, brightening shaded areas with luminous foliage throughout the growing season.

The narrow leaves feature bright golden centres surrounded by deep green margins, creating a dramatic contrast that stands out in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and underplantings. In spring and often intermittently throughout summer, cheerful violet-blue flowers appear above the foliage, adding another layer of colour and seasonal interest. The blooms attract pollinators while providing a classic periwinkle display.

Illumination forms a dense, low-growing mat that spreads steadily to cover bare ground, suppress weeds, and reduce landscape maintenance. Its colourful foliage remains attractive from spring through fall and often provides winter interest in milder regions. The combination of bright foliage and adaptability makes it an excellent choice for difficult shaded locations where many plants struggle.

In Alberta, Illumination Periwinkle performs best in protected locations with well-drained soil and is especially valued for adding year-round colour and texture to shaded garden spaces.

Sun Requirements ▾

Partial shade to full shade is ideal. The bright golden foliage develops its best colour in locations with filtered light, morning sun, or dappled shade. Some direct morning sunlight can enhance leaf colour, while protection from intense afternoon sun helps prevent foliage scorch. In deep shade, growth remains healthy but foliage colour may be slightly less vibrant.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture during extended dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Trim occasionally to control spread and maintain a tidy appearance. Apply mulch around new plantings to help conserve moisture and encourage establishment.
