Pink-a-Blue Lungwort (Pulmonaria ‘Pink-a-Blue’) – Proven Winners®

Pink-a-Blue Lungwort (Pulmonaria ‘Pink-a-Blue’) – Proven Winners®

Pink-a-Blue Lungwort is a Proven Winners® shade perennial valued for its unique colour-changing blooms and attractive foliage. This cultivar of Pulmonaria produces flowers that open pink and mature to blue, creating a multi-toned display on a single plant.

This herbaceous perennial forms a low clump of textured green foliage, often lightly spotted or mottled. In early to mid-spring, clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers emerge in shades of pink, gradually transitioning to soft blue as they mature. The blooms attract early pollinators such as bees and provide some of the first colour in shaded gardens.

Pink-a-Blue Lungwort is well-suited for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and underplanting. Its early bloom time and interesting foliage make it a valuable addition to shade-focused landscape designs.

Sun Requirements ▾

Partial shade to shade. Morning sun, dappled sunlight, or bright filtered light provides excellent growing conditions. Protection from intense midday and afternoon sun helps prevent foliage scorch and moisture stress. In cooler climates, Pink-a-Blue® can tolerate some additional sunlight when adequate soil moisture is available.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Keep the soil relatively evenly moist, particularly during establishment and active spring growth. Allow the upper portion of the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but avoid prolonged drought. Consistent moisture is especially beneficial during hot weather, although the soil should remain well drained.

Care Tips ▾

Remove faded flower stems after blooming to direct attention toward the attractive foliage. Damaged or tired leaves can also be trimmed away to encourage fresh growth. Apply organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and keep the soil cool, but avoid piling mulch directly against the crown. Good air circulation helps maintain healthy foliage. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
