Prince of Orange Oriental Poppy (Papaver orientale ‘Prince of Orange’)

Prince of Orange Oriental Poppy (Papaver orientale ‘Prince of Orange’)

Prince of Orange Oriental Poppy is a bold, flowering perennial valued for its large, vivid orange blooms and dramatic garden presence. This cultivar of Papaver orientale is known for its intense colour and classic poppy form, making it a standout in late spring landscapes.

This herbaceous perennial forms a clump of coarse, deeply lobed green foliage. In late spring to early summer, it produces large, papery flowers in brilliant orange tones, often with dark centres that create striking contrast. The blooms attract pollinators such as bees and provide strong visual impact in the garden.

Prince of Orange Oriental Poppy is well-suited for borders, cottage gardens, and focal plantings. Its bold blooms and upright stems make it ideal for adding seasonal drama and colour to perennial beds.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun. Plant in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Abundant sunlight promotes sturdy flower stems, vigorous spring growth, and the strongest floral display. Light partial shade may be tolerated, but flowering is generally best in open, sunny locations.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low to moderate. Provide regular moisture during spring growth and flowering, allowing the upper portion of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Oriental Poppies tolerate relatively dry conditions. Reduce watering as the foliage naturally enters summer dormancy and avoid persistently wet soil.

Care Tips ▾

Deadhead spent flowers if a tidy appearance is preferred, or leave some seed heads standing for their ornamental appearance. Allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back after flowering before removing it. Oriental Poppies develop substantial taproots and dislike being moved once established, so choose their permanent location carefully. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
