Proven Winners® Glow Girl® Birchleaf Spirea (Spiraea betulifolia ‘Glow Girl®’) (PW)

Proven Winners® Glow Girl® Birchleaf Spirea (Spiraea betulifolia ‘Glow Girl®’) (PW) is a compact hardy shrub prized for its vibrant golden foliage, clusters of white spring flowers, and exceptional cold tolerance. This colourful deciduous shrub adds season-long brightness and texture to borders, foundation plantings, rock gardens, and low-maintenance landscape designs.

The small birch-like leaves emerge brilliant golden-yellow in spring and maintain bright colour throughout the growing season, especially when planted in full sun. In late spring to early summer, clusters of crisp white flowers appear across the shrub and attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. As temperatures cool in autumn, the foliage often develops attractive orange and red tones for added seasonal interest.

Its naturally compact rounded growth habit makes Glow Girl® an excellent choice for smaller gardens, edging, mass plantings, and colourful shrub borders. Birchleaf spirea varieties are especially valued for their superior cold hardiness and durability in Prairie climates while requiring very little maintenance once established.

In Alberta, Glow Girl® Birchleaf Spirea performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, it thrives in Prairie conditions with excellent drought tolerance and reliable winter hardiness.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun for the best foliage colour, flowering performance, and fall colour display. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate light partial shade, the golden foliage may become less vibrant and flowering may be reduced in lower light conditions.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment; mature plants tolerate periods of drought once established.

Care Tips ▾

Prune in early spring before new growth emerges if shaping is desired. Minimal pruning is typically needed to maintain its naturally tidy form.
