Rosemary Seeds by West Coast Seeds (Salvia rosmarinus)

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), formerly classified as Rosmarinus officinalis, is a fragrant evergreen herb known for its needle-like foliage and distinctive woody aroma. This Mediterranean perennial produces upright stems lined with narrow deep green leaves that release a strong herbal fragrance when touched. Mature plants may develop small pale blue flowers that attract pollinators and add ornamental value to herb gardens.

In culinary use, rosemary is valued for its bold flavor and is widely used in roasted vegetables, meats, breads, and infused oils. The plant grows as a compact woody shrub over time and performs well in herb beds, raised planters, and containers with excellent drainage. Its evergreen foliage also makes it a visually appealing herb for year-round garden structure in suitable climates.

Rosemary is sometimes referred to as garden rosemary or culinary rosemary and remains one of the most widely grown Mediterranean herbs. This listing is for seed packets only and does not include live plants.

Sun Requirements ▾

Rosemary requires full sun and performs best when exposed to strong direct light for most of the day. Insufficient light can result in weak stems and reduced aromatic oil production. Extremely intense heat combined with poor airflow may stress the plant, but strong sunlight generally supports vigorous growth.

Watering Instructions ▾

Water moderately and allow the soil to dry partially between watering sessions. Rosemary prefers slightly drier soil conditions and is sensitive to excessive moisture around the roots. During warmer growing periods, watering may need to be slightly increased, while cooler seasons require reduced watering to prevent root rot.

Care Tips ▾

Rosemary thrives in well-draining sandy or loamy soil that mimics Mediterranean growing conditions. The plant prefers stable temperatures and benefits from environments with moderate humidity and strong air circulation. Consistent drainage and soil aeration are important to prevent root stress and maintain healthy woody growth. Sow rosemary seeds indoors approximately 8–10 weeks before the last frost to allow adequate germination time. Soil temperatures around 18–24°C improve germination success, which may take 14–28 days. Seedlings can be transplanted outdoors after frost risk has passed and soil has warmed. Harvest sprigs once plants develop established woody stems, cutting small sections regularly to encourage fuller growth.
