Scented Geranium (Pelargonium spp.)

Scented Geranium (Pelargonium spp.)

Scented Geranium (Pelargonium spp.) is a versatile and highly fragrant plant prized for its aromatic foliage, attractive growth habit, and wide range of unique scents. Available in fragrances that may include rose, lemon, citronella, mint, apple, coconut, spice, and other delightful aromas, scented geraniums are grown primarily for their foliage rather than their flowers.

The textured leaves release their fragrance when touched, brushed against, or gently crushed, making these plants a favourite for sensory gardens, patios, walkways, and outdoor entertaining spaces. Throughout the growing season, clusters of delicate flowers in shades of pink, lavender, white, or purple add ornamental appeal while attracting bees and other pollinators.

Scented geraniums form attractive bushy plants that thrive in containers, window boxes, herb gardens, mixed planters, and decorative patio displays. Their fragrant foliage can be used in potpourri, sachets, dried arrangements, and other craft projects. With their unique scents and easy-care nature, they bring both beauty and fragrance to indoor and outdoor spaces.

In Alberta, scented geraniums are most commonly grown as seasonal patio plants and container specimens, though they can be overwintered indoors in a bright location.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun to bright indirect light. Outdoors, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the healthiest growth and strongest fragrance. In very hot locations, light afternoon shade can be beneficial. Indoors, place near a bright south- or west-facing window. An LED grow light can help maintain healthy growth in spaces with limited natural light.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Allow the top portion of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid keeping soil consistently wet and ensure containers have good drainage.

Care Tips ▾

Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage fuller, bushier growth. Place near patios, entrances, or walkways where the fragrant foliage can be enjoyed. A moisture meter is a great way to gauge your plant's moisture levels.
