Scotch Heather (Calluna vulgaris)

Scotch Heather (Calluna vulgaris)

Scotch Heather is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its fine-textured foliage, abundant flowers, and year-round garden interest. Calluna vulgaris, commonly known as Scotch Heather or Heather, develops masses of small flowers along upright stems from summer into fall. Depending on the variety, blooms can appear in shades of pink, purple, lavender, red, or white, creating beautiful colour when many other garden plants are beginning to wind down for the season.

With its naturally low-growing, mounded habit, Scotch Heather is an excellent choice for rock gardens, garden borders, pathways, mass plantings, and outdoor containers. Its small evergreen leaves provide texture beyond the flowering season, while planting several together can create a dense, colourful groundcover effect. The late-season flowers can also provide a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinators, adding both ornamental and ecological value to the garden.

Scotch Heather performs best in full sun and acidic, well-draining soil with consistent moisture during establishment. Excellent drainage is especially important, as Heather does not perform well in heavy or consistently waterlogged soil. In colder Canadian and Prairie gardens, choosing a protected planting location and providing winter protection can help reduce damage from drying winter winds and fluctuating temperatures. With the right soil and location, Scotch Heather provides distinctive foliage, seasonal flowers, and compact structure for garden beds and containers.

Sun Requirements ▾

Scotch Heather performs best in full sun, where it generally develops dense growth, strong foliage colour, and abundant flowering. Aim for approximately six or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Some light partial shade can be tolerated, but excessive shade may reduce flowering and produce less compact growth.

Watering Instructions ▾

Keep the soil consistently moist while the plant becomes established, but never continuously saturated. Established plants prefer even moisture with good drainage and should not be allowed to remain excessively dry for prolonged periods. Container-grown plants require more frequent monitoring. A moisture meter can be useful for determining moisture levels below the soil surface before watering.

Care Tips ▾

Plant Scotch Heather in acidic, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Avoid heavy, poorly drained locations and strongly alkaline growing media. A layer of suitable mulch can help moderate soil temperature and moisture around the shallow root system. Avoid excessive fertilizer, particularly products that can increase soil alkalinity. In southern Alberta, selecting a protected site and maintaining appropriate soil conditions are especially important.
