Silver Carpet Snow-in-Summer (Cerastium tomentosum ‘Silver Carpet’)

Silver Carpet Snow-in-Summer (Cerastium tomentosum ‘Silver Carpet’)

Silver Carpet Snow-in-Summer (Cerastium tomentosum ‘Silver Carpet’) is a low-growing perennial groundcover prized for its dense silvery foliage and masses of crisp white flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. This hardy drought-tolerant perennial forms a soft carpet-like mat that adds texture, brightness, and seasonal colour to rock gardens, borders, slopes, and sunny landscape plantings.

The finely textured silver-gray foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season and creates excellent contrast against green foliage plants and colourful flowering perennials. In bloom, the plant becomes covered with bright white star-shaped flowers, creating the appearance of a blanket of fresh snow across the garden. Its spreading habit makes it especially useful for edging pathways, cascading over retaining walls, and filling dry difficult planting spaces.

In Alberta, Silver Carpet Snow-in-Summer performs best in full sun with sharply drained soil. It thrives during hot dry Prairie summers and tolerates poor rocky soils once established. Excellent drainage is especially important during winter months to help maintain healthy perennial growth and prevent root rot.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for the best flowering, healthiest growth, and brightest silver foliage colour. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sun helps maintain a dense, compact habit and encourages abundant blooms. Plants grown in too much shade may become sparse, produce fewer flowers, and lose some of their distinctive silver colouring.

Watering Instructions ▾

Low. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry periods. Once established, plants are highly drought tolerant and prefer drier growing conditions.

Care Tips ▾

Shear lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage dense foliage growth. Avoid overly rich or poorly drained soils.
