Taylor Juniper (Juniperus virginiana ‘Taylor’)

Taylor Juniper (Juniperus virginiana ‘Taylor’)

Taylor Juniper (Juniperus virginiana ‘Taylor’) is a hardy narrow evergreen prized for its elegant columnar shape, dense blue-green foliage, and exceptional cold tolerance. This upright juniper provides strong vertical structure and year-round colour in foundation plantings, privacy screens, formal gardens, and narrow landscape spaces where a tall slender evergreen is desired.

Its tightly upright growth habit creates a refined architectural appearance similar to Italian cypress but with far greater cold hardiness for Prairie climates. The dense blue-green foliage maintains its attractive colour throughout all seasons, providing valuable winter structure and screening in residential landscapes. Its naturally narrow form requires very little pruning, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for modern and formal garden designs.

Taylor Juniper is highly adaptable and tolerates drought, wind, urban pollution, and poor soils once established. Its vertical form makes it especially useful for framing entrances, creating privacy in tight spaces, or adding evergreen accents to mixed landscape plantings.

In Alberta, Taylor Juniper performs best in full sun with sharply drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, it thrives in Prairie conditions with excellent drought resistance and outstanding winter hardiness.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for the healthiest growth, densest foliage, and strongest upright form. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun promotes rich blue-green colour, improved branching density, and superior disease resistance. Plants grown in too much shade may become thinner and less compact.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water consistently during the first few growing seasons. Once established, Taylor Juniper is highly drought tolerant and requires little supplemental watering except during extended dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Water regularly during establishment and avoid planting in poorly drained areas. Minimal pruning is needed to maintain its naturally columnar shape.
