Tendersweet Carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus ‘Tendersweet’)

Tendersweet Carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus ‘Tendersweet’)

Tendersweet Carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus ‘Tendersweet’) is a popular heirloom carrot variety prized for its exceptional sweetness, tender texture, and large, smooth roots. Known for producing some of the sweetest carrots available, this reliable variety is ideal for gardeners seeking outstanding flavour for fresh eating, juicing, cooking, and preserving.

The long, tapered roots develop a deep orange colour and typically grow 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) in length. Their fine texture and high sugar content make them especially enjoyable straight from the garden. Tendersweet carrots are excellent for salads, snacks, roasting, soups, juices, and freezing, maintaining their flavour and quality throughout the growing season.

This vigorous variety performs best in loose, well-drained soil where roots can develop straight and uniform. Its dependable growth and excellent flavour have made it a favourite among home gardeners for generations. The attractive feathery green tops also add ornamental value to vegetable gardens and raised beds.

In Alberta, Tendersweet Carrots grow exceptionally well during the cooler growing season and produce high-quality harvests from summer through fall.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for maximum root development and sweetness. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Bright sunlight encourages vigorous top growth and helps produce large, flavourful carrots. Light shade is tolerated but may reduce root size and overall yields.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Maintain consistently moist soil during germination and root development. Irregular watering can contribute to splitting or misshapen roots.

Care Tips ▾

Sow seed directly into the garden as carrots do not transplant well. Thin seedlings early to allow roots adequate space to develop. Keep the planting area free of weeds during establishment.
