Weeping Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Pendula’)

Weeping Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Pendula’)

Weeping Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Pendula’) is a dramatic evergreen conifer prized for its cascading weeping branches, deep green needles, and striking architectural form. This unique ornamental spruce creates a bold focal point in landscapes, rock gardens, and feature plantings where year-round texture and structure are desired.

Its gracefully drooping branches create a flowing sculptural appearance that becomes increasingly dramatic as the tree matures. Depending on how it is trained and staked, Weeping Norway Spruce can develop into a tall narrow specimen with cascading side branches or a more spreading artistic form that drapes beautifully across slopes and garden spaces. The dense evergreen needles maintain rich dark green colour throughout all seasons, providing exceptional winter interest in Prairie landscapes.

This distinctive conifer pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, boulders, flowering shrubs, and modern landscape designs where strong texture and form are important. Its unique silhouette makes it especially valuable as a specimen tree in residential landscapes and collector gardens.

In Alberta, Weeping Norway Spruce performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, it develops excellent cold hardiness and adapts well to Prairie conditions with minimal maintenance.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is ideal for the healthiest growth, densest branching, and richest needle colour. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate very light shade, full sun encourages the strongest structure and best overall appearance. Avoid heavily shaded sites, which may reduce density and vigour.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, the tree is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during extended dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Stake young plants if a taller upright form is desired. Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing damaged branches or shaping for aesthetic purposes.
