Woodward Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum ‘Woodward’)

Woodward Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum ‘Woodward’)

Woodward Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum ‘Woodward’) is a hardy evergreen shrub prized for its dense blue-green foliage, naturally tidy form, and exceptional cold tolerance. This low-maintenance juniper provides year-round structure, colour, and texture in foundation plantings, rock gardens, borders, and Prairie landscape designs.

The soft blue-green evergreen foliage maintains its colour throughout all seasons, adding valuable winter interest when many landscape plants are dormant. Its naturally dense compact growth habit forms a broad rounded shape that requires very little pruning, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes and modern garden designs.

Woodward Juniper is highly adaptable and performs well in a variety of conditions including drought, wind, poor soils, and urban environments once established. Its evergreen structure pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and other conifers in mixed landscape plantings.

In Alberta, Woodward Juniper performs best in full sun with sharply drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, it thrives in Prairie climates with excellent drought tolerance and outstanding winter hardiness.

Sun Requirements ▾

Full sun is essential for the healthiest growth, densest branching, and richest blue-green foliage colour. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun promotes compact growth and strong disease resistance. Plants grown in too much shade may become thinner and less dense over time.

Watering Instructions ▾

Moderate. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Woodward Juniper is drought tolerant and typically requires supplemental watering only during prolonged dry periods.

Care Tips ▾

Plant in well-drained soil and avoid overwatering once established. Minimal pruning is required beyond occasional shaping or removal of damaged branches.
